For me, becoming isn’t about arriving somewhere or achieving a certain aim. I see it instead as a forwards motion, a means of evolving, a way to reach continuously toward a better self.
– Michelle Obama
I’m sure by now, there’s not a single person who doesn’t know about Michelle Obama. The former First Lady of the United States, who played a big role in advocating public health and education. Making her an important role model to many people around the world.
So it’s not a surprise when her autobiography was released last year, people were so eager to buy it. And I was lucky enough to be able to buy it a few months ago. But because of my packed schedule this past week, I’ve just finished reading it two days ago and thought that I would like to share what I think of this book.
In today’s era, a totally free education is something we rarely see in our surroundings. And our society nowadays still have the mindset that the more expensive a school is, the higher the quality would be. But since today, SMA Selamat Pagi Indonesia has proved me wrong.
We have gone through the days of the World Scholar’s Cup Manila Not So Mini Global Round in my previous post. So the experience would not be complete if I don’t talk about the last day of WSC, when we had the Talent Show and most importantly, the Award Ceremony.
In the Talent Show, I performed a piano cover of BTS’ song which is Mikrokosmos. As you may know, before I went to Manila, I already created this cover and upload it on my youtube channel a while ago. So for preparation, I only practiced it more to lessen the chance of mistake.
After a long wait since theRegional Round of WSC I had in May, I was finally given the opportunity to join one of the Global Round in Manila from 6 – 11 September. Same as the Regional Round before, it feels amazing to be there. To be in the same program with these people from all around the world that have the same enthusiasm in learning and celebrating it. Therefore, I will try as I hard as I could to capture those moments and feelings in this post.
Just like what I stated, of how this Global Round brought together a bunch of people from around the world, that is exactly what happened during the first day. As a part of the opening, all of the scholars did Scavenger Hunt around the area of the venue which was actually a mall. Around 800 scholars were divided into 40 teams in this activity, making up 18-20 scholars in each team.
Whether you are my future self who is currently scrolling through your old posts and crossed upon this writing, or maybe you are just a random person who stumbled across this notes; welcome to a post full of reflections of mine about self-love .
In my opinion, insecurities and low self-esteem is something that every has been going through. Our society has gradually set up this standard of how a person should look like, how a student should have certain grades to be accepted by everyone, and how certain values should change because “it’s not the majorities”. Standards that has gone far too toxic for everyone.
Teenagers and young adults are doing things like self-harm, extremely unhealthy ‘diet’, or just basically anxious that their opinion won’t be accepted by the public because of it. Number of people committing suicide are increasing every year, but we still need more people who truly cares about those issues.
Therefore, I think it’s a great time for me to write some messages of the things I’ve learned these past years about loving and understanding myself. I hope that these notes can be a reminder for everyone who’s currently going through the crazy roller coaster of life. So just sit back, relax, and let the words speaks to you on a personal level.
#1 If you have the personality of a ‘people-pleaser’, or maybe your schedule is so hectic until you barely care about yourself. Take a break. Believe me, it’s not wrong to please yourself when things every once in a while as a reward. Snuggle up in your comfy blanket. Entertain yourself with a good book, maybe even a movie or TV show that you always want to watch. Listen to the songs you missed out on. And understand that your mind, body, and soul might need some love as well.
#2 Living in a city could means that you live in the center of attraction. Many high-quality facilities are available at the tip of your hand. But it also means the nonstop hustle of its people who seem to be chasing time. And I’m sure that everyone should take a break from this busy life. Go somewhere a little quieter. I recommend you places like a small park or somewhere you can connect with nature. Admire how the sky looks, how the stars shine and could seem so magical. Breath in the fresh air, and start to appreciate every little things in life that you might not notice before.
#3 If your mind seems to be lost all the time, keep calm and try to write a journal, where you can express all of your feelings and thoughts that you don’t want to share with other people. By writing a journal and reading it occasionally, it could really make you understand and know yourself more than before. You will understand the patterns of your behaviour and how it changes from time to time. Therefore, I think it is a great way to get back on track and to know what you actually want in life.
#4 Surround yourself with positive friends and don’t be scared to shut out the ones who brings negativity to your life. Because when you’re at your worst condition and you can not love yourself, your friends are the one who is going to affect you personally. So be in a friendship where everyone understand and will always be there for each other.
#5 Haters are gonna hate, and you need to keep improving. Be sure and think about what you desire in life. Then strive to achieve those things that you want, not the things that other people want.
Finally, to end this messages compilation, I’ll remind you once more to keep loving yourself and accept both your weaknesses and strengths. I hope you find it somewhat helpful, and see you in my next post!
Time has passed, and a character has revised. This is what happened to the character Princess Jasmine in the new live-action version of the movie ‘Aladdin’. In the original movies, we know her as a princess who dislike to be isolated from the other world. Although she and her father argued quite a lot about it, it is undeniable that she care so much about him. But sadly, we didn’t get to see the full potential of this character in that movie.
That’s why when I watched the newest version of Aladdin, I was amused by the character development in Princess Jasmine. She was portrayed as a young independent princess, who are not afraid to speak up whenever something is not right in her opinion. She is full of knowledge and dreams of the future Agrabah, until she always wanted to be the next Sultan. All of her immense bravery, independence, and other values made me think that the character and movie could promote women empowerment. Therefore I believe all of us can learn something from her.
As someone who’s introvert and was rarely doing any public speaking, it is very challenging for me to talk in front of a lot of people, and this also apply with debate. But lately, I really want to prove myself that I can actually do public speaking. So then, when I know that there is this debate competition called ‘World Scholar’s Cup’, I feel like it could help me improve my self-confidence and public speaking skill. And that’s why I joined this competition.
Right now some of you might be thinking, what is World Scholar’s Cup? Well, as I said before, it is a team debate competition with 3 people in each teams. But that’s not the only activities they have in this event. There are also Collaborative Writing, Scholar’s Challenge, and Scholar’s Bowl. I will explain these activities throughout the story.
Playground of Ujung Pandang has become one of the unforgettable memories in my mind. The event was full of nerve-wrecking experiences, happiness, frustration, and tears. All of Cikal students tried to show the best of themselves. And I believe that everyone succeed to do it. But actually, in my opinion the most important is how we really put our time and heart in the preparation for this event. And also how teachers, students, and every member of the Sekolah Cikal Surabaya create bonds of trust and understanding during the entire preparation months. So I will try to include all of those ethereal feelings in this notes.
So yesterday, I just uploaded a new song (Enigma) that I wrote this past few weeks on my youtube channel. But before I explain the meaning of this song, I want to put the video below this paragraph so you can listen to it first.
I originally wrote this song because of the English project from my school. Long story short, the project is about writing and presenting a persuasive proposal about a case that concerned us. So for the project, we must make a product that will help us persuade people to fight against the case that we already chose.
I chose bullying for my case in this assignment. The reason is because, after I did a research, I found out that most students, children, or teens experienced bullying at least once in their lifetime. I also found out that 1 in 4 teachers see nothing wrong with bullying and will only intervene 4% of the time. So after finding out those facts, I really want to make the number of bullying decrease, and that’s also why I made this song.
Starting from the title, the meaning of enigma itself is an unexplainable situation. And in my opinion, it’s perfect for the term bullying because the victims usually can’t explain what they have been going through.
While in the song, I explain about how hard it is to go through bullying. From having a major trust issue, have a feeling that she / he is neglected, and that it is not easy to fight back the bully. So with the song, I hope people can be more aware that bullying is a social problem that we need to solve together.
