It’s Okay Not to Be Okay

A feature article (Year 10 English Acquisition assignment) for Sekolah Cikal Surabaya Student Council‘s Bilik Ekspresi Program.

It was 11 pm when Sarah, who was already half-asleep, nearly jolted awake due to what she guessed were the 10th intrusive thoughts she had that night. From school-related anxiety to an existential crisis. The number of things her mind can worry about is endless. Yet she doesn’t know how to stop it either. Hence, sleep deprivation has somehow become a habit for her lately.

While others might not experience it as worse, Sarah’s story represents the lives of millions of teenagers during the pandemic. Even though they long to wander and explore the world, for over a year now, they are confined in their own house with a puzzle that seems unsolvable; their negative thoughts and emotions.

Before the pandemic, most teenagers are used to distracting themselves from facing these thoughts. So when the pandemic hits, they are forced to face all their negative emotions without any preparation beforehand. As a result, the pandemic worsens their conditions further. Lack of peer support, miscommunication in an online school, and other stressful situations have all contributed to the deterioration of teenagers’ mental health.

According to UNICEF, teenagers in half of all households in Indonesia showed signs of difficulty concentrating and sleeping. Behavioral and emotional problems have also gotten more severe as a necessary psychological intervention has not been done.

While recovering from these negative conditions might feel impossible, turns out it is still feasible to do. “Although I’m an extrovert, I have learned that some alone time gives me so much more time to do self-reflection, figure out what is the cause of the problems I’m facing, and then improve my well-being from there,” said Dea, Sarah’s friend, when they discussed mental health.

Teenagers’ coping mechanisms may vary, but the key to all of them is the ability to accept and reflect on each of their conditions. Some might apply it through writing their thoughts, some others through painting or art-related mediums. Whatever it is, validating their thoughts and emotions should be the first step for teenagers to cope and heal through this hard time.

World Scholar’s Cup | Manila Not So Mini Global Round 2019 (2)

We have gone through the days of the World Scholar’s Cup Manila Not So Mini Global Round in my previous post. So the experience would not be complete if I don’t talk about the last day of WSC, when we had the Talent Show and most importantly, the Award Ceremony.

In the Talent Show, I performed a piano cover of BTS’ song which is Mikrokosmos. As you may know, before I went to Manila, I already created this cover and upload it on my youtube channel a while ago. So for preparation, I only practiced it more to lessen the chance of mistake.

World Scholar’s Cup | Manila Not So Mini Global Round 2019 (1)

After a long wait since the Regional Round of WSC I had in May, I was finally given the opportunity to join one of the Global Round in Manila from 6 – 11 September. Same as the Regional Round before, it feels amazing to be there. To be in the same program with these people from all around the world that have the same enthusiasm in learning and celebrating it. Therefore, I will try as I hard as I could to capture those moments and feelings in this post.

The 2 teams from Sekolah Cikal Surabaya

Just like what I stated, of how this Global Round brought together a bunch of people from around the world, that is exactly what happened during the first day. As a part of the opening, all of the scholars did Scavenger Hunt around the area of the venue which was actually a mall. Around 800 scholars were divided into 40 teams in this activity, making up 18-20 scholars in each team.

27.04.19 // Playground of Ujung Pandang: Behind the Scenes and My Experience

Playground of Ujung Pandang has become one of the unforgettable memories in my mind. The event was full of nerve-wrecking experiences, happiness, frustration, and tears. All of Cikal students tried to show the best of themselves. And I believe that everyone succeed to do it. But actually, in my opinion the most important is how we really put our time and heart in the preparation for this event. And also how teachers, students, and every member of the Sekolah Cikal Surabaya create bonds of trust and understanding during the entire preparation months. So I will try to include all of those ethereal feelings in this notes.

A Short Note About My New Song: Enigma

So yesterday, I just uploaded a new song (Enigma) that I wrote this past few weeks on my youtube channel. But before I explain the meaning of this song, I want to put the video below this paragraph so you can listen to it first.

I originally wrote this song because of the English project from my school. Long story short, the project is about writing and presenting a persuasive proposal about a case that concerned us. So for the project, we must make a product that will help us persuade people to fight against the case that we already chose.

I chose bullying for my case in this assignment. The reason is because, after I did a research, I found out that most students, children, or teens experienced bullying at least once in their lifetime. I also found out that 1 in 4 teachers see nothing wrong with bullying and will only intervene 4% of the time. So after finding out those facts, I really want to make the number of bullying decrease, and that’s also why I made this song.

Starting from the title, the meaning of enigma itself is an unexplainable situation. And in my opinion, it’s perfect for the term bullying because the victims usually can’t explain what they have been going through.

While in the song, I explain about how hard it is to go through bullying. From having a major trust issue, have a feeling that she / he is neglected, and that it is not easy to fight back the bully. So with the song, I hope people can be more aware that bullying is a social problem that we need to solve together.

My Summative Assessments in Term 2

After quite a long time learning in Sekolah Cikal Surabaya, it’s finally almost the end of the school semester. And that also means I need to finish all of my term 2 summative assessments in time. Just like last term, the summative assessments that I got were very interesting so I decided to share some of it in this blog.

The first assessment was from English lesson. I think, this was the most complicated assessment that I got comparing to the other assessments. So first, we observed some issues that we faced in our daily life for a week. For me, it includes traffic jam, bumpy road, littering, and etc. The next step was, we chose one issue out of the seven issues that we already found on the observation and made a road map about it.

My First Time Following Taekwondo Exam

Do you still remember, I ever told you in my second Weekly Reflection that I join Taekwondo club? Well, as I said at that reflection, one of the reason I join this club was because my parents want me to have enough skill to protect myself, and also because through this activity I can do physical exercise more often.

To be honest, at the first time I become a new member, it was difficult for me to enjoy it. But after a few weeks of practice, I can finally adapt to this activity. And today was the first time I follow a Taekwondo Exam after about 3 months of practicing. The exam was to upgrade my level from white belt to yellow belt. In this exam I presented the stances that I have already learned. In total, there were 2 basics (gibon / basic 1 and 2) and 8 stances that I presented. The stances include one punch, 4 kicks, and 3 blocks.

My Motoric Development Stimulation Project

As you guys may know, one of the elective class that I join in is Fabric Product Design. In this class, I need to make a fabric product that can be use for children’s developmental stimulation. So the product that I chose is a fine motor stimulation by making clothing learning aids. The reason I chose this type of learning aids is because I want to help children that maybe still need help with their motor skill.

My First Camp in Sekolah Cikal (2): The Kaliandra Eco Resort

In the first story of my camp at Kaliandra, I wrote about what I have learned during the leadership training. So in this post, I will share about my activities besides the main program and also some descriptions about the Kaliandra Eco Resort.

I already said that the Kaliandra Resort area is full of trees and it’s quite cold, especially at night. So I recommend you to bring jacket and maybe extra blanket if you don’t really like cold. But don’t worry, the cold weather is only at night. While in the afternoon, it usually felt warm.
